Why Use UV Germicidal Lights?

Delivering Quality Comfort to the Homes and Businesses of Hartford County and New Haven County
|

We all want to live comfortably in our homes throughout the year. However, many homeowners make the mistake of assuming that all they have to do to make this the case is to keep their heating and air conditioning systems in fine working order. This is not true, though, as the quality of the air in your home is every bit as important to the overall comfort level therein as its temperature is. That is why you may want to consider using some indoor air quality products in order to boost the quality of the air that you breathe in your living space. If you have issues with biological pollutants, for instance, using UV lights in Hartford, CT can be hugely beneficial.

What Are UV Lights?

UV lights, or UV air purifiers, are devices that are integrated directly into your HVAC system. Typically, they will be installed within the ductwork, near your air handler. This strategic placement helps to ensure that all of the air passing through your system is treated. The lights emit small, safe amounts of UV (ultraviolet) radiation, which is confined to your ductwork. While some homeowners may shudder at the mention of "radiation," you should remember that this is the same reason that your skin burns when out in the sun for too long. The light emitted doesn't pass through your ductwork, and poses absolutely no health risks to you, your children, your pets, or anyone else in the house.

Benefits of UV Air Cleaning

It does pose a risk to biological pollutants, though, and that is the whole point. When these pollutants, including viruses, mold and bacteria, are affected by the UV light, they are disrupted at the DNA level. Essentially, your UV air purifiers will leave the pollutants incapable of reproduction; this won't get rid of mold that has already taken hold in your home, of course. However, it does mean that these pollutants will not proliferate throughout your home, and that they won't continue to reproduce when the are trapped in filters or make their way into your living space. You should use UV germicidal lights as a supplement to, not a replacement for, air filters, though, as they will not do anything about other pollutants, such as dirt and dust.
