Home Heating Tip: Why Choose a Hybrid Heating System?

Delivering Quality Comfort to the Homes and Businesses of Hartford County and New Haven County

Hybrid heating systems combine the features of a traditional furnace and a newer heat pump, offering considerable advantages over alternative forms of heating. Why choose a hybrid heating system? It helps to understand what exactly such a system entails.

Let’s start with the heat pump, which essentially acts as a “reversible” air conditioner. The refrigerant in the system pulls heat out of the air inside your home in the summertime, then releases it into the outside air. In the winter, that process is reversed, with refrigerant releasing heat into your home after pulling it from the outside air.  That process works very efficiently in climates where the temperatures rarely get below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, saving the homeowner money on his monthly bills while still providing a comfortable home no matter what the weather is outside.

There’s only one small problem with that equation. Here in Hartford, temperatures drop well below 40 degrees for good chunk of the year, meaning that the heat pump’s efficiency is severely reduced. A hybrid system adds a supplementary heat source, a gas furnace, augmenting its heating power. In the summer, the heat pump works as efficiently as it would in a warmer climate. In the fall, it serves as a fine source of heat all on its own. In the winter, the gas furnace keeps you warm: reducing costs for using a traditional heater alone without skimping on the warmth and comfort you need when the temperatures drop.

Not only does that all save you money on your monthly heating and cooling bills, but its a very environmentally friendly way to keep your home comfortable all year round.
